-          CA Technical Regulations

-          CV Technical Regulations

-          2018 Series Regulations

3. Series Structure

3.1 Age and Membership Requirements

-       international UCI road licence (J19 or older)

-       Cycling Australia RACE Membership* (J19 or older)

*3 race permits and 1 Day Memberships will not be accepted. 1 Day memberships may be accepted for visiting riders from overseas.

Interstate Participation is encouraged in the series. These individuals will be provided a grade upon their first event entry. They are required to provide proof of their ability level at the time of event registration.

IMPORTANT: Male riders holding a Masters licence are eligible to ride in Masters categories only. Riders of Masters age holding an Elite licence are eligible to ride Masters or Elite Categories (changes during the Series are allowed).

Masters Riders will be provided with an Elite and Masters grade if they have an Elite Membership.

3.2 Entry and Scratching Process

Individual entries for all events will be taken via ENTRYBOSS. Entries usually open 4-6 weeks prior to the event. Entries close at midnight on the Sunday prior to the event.

Riders who haven’t raced in a VRS event before MUST submit information to support the handicapping when entering on Entryboss.

Team Entries will be taken via SportsTG. Teams who have all their riders enter via Entryboss will need to send an email with the team nomination to vic.racing@cycling.org.au before entries close. Failure to do so will end in the riders being listed as individuals.

Late entries may be accepted at the discretion of Cycling Victoria. A late entry fee will be charged according the CV Race Entry Policy.

Important: All late entry requests and general entry inquiries need to be sent to vic.racing@cycling.org.au

Riders can scratch (with a full refund) from a race via Entryboss until entries close. A refund after the cut-off can be granted if a rider provides a medical certificate within 7 days of the event.

3.3 Categories

The following Series categories must be run as part of each Series event:

Men A Grade*

Men B Grade

Men C Grade

Masters A Grade*

Masters B Grade

Masters C Grade

Women A Grade*

Women B Grade

Women C Grade

Event organisers are free to add additional categories. Cycling Victoria reserves the right to trial additional categories at certain events. These will not be eligible for Series Points.

Please note that at combined NRS/VRS events (i.e. Sam Miranda) there will be no separate VRS A Grade race or points. A Grade riders may participate in the VRS B Grade event if they:

  • are not registered with a NRS team AND
  • haven’t participated in a NRS event within the last 12 months

NRS teams who have a full contingent of riders in the NRS race may have additional team riders entered in B grade.

In such cases riders who downgrade a combined NRS/VRS event will not be eligible for the B Grade VRS points but will be eligible for prize money or any other prices offered to the category placegetters by the race organiser.

* These categories are open to individuals and teams

3.4 Grading

All riders have been graded and are on the Victorian Road Grading list. At the start of the year riders will have the right to query their grade however after the first event it will not change based on the type of course (e.g. hilly vs flat) unless it is changed by Cycling Victoria or the change occurs in relation to sections d), e) or f) in this paragraph

Masters Riders will be provided with a general and Masters Ability Category if they have an Elite Membership.

In most instances riders may be upgraded upon achieving a certain amount of grading points (refer to table 2) during the year. After the 2018 season the points will be calculated on a rolling 12 month basis.

Table 3: Grading Points

b) Cycling Victoria reserves the right to upgrade riders at their discretion anytime. This especially applies to riders who haven’t scored the necessary amount of grading points yet but clearly outperform in their category.

c) A rider that is upgraded during the season will retain a third of their VRS points from the previous grade (rounded up to the next whole number) to the next ability category. Grading points are not carried to the next category.

d) Riders coming back from a short-term injury or sickness may request to temporarily downgrade. However they will be unable to score Series points.

e) Riders who compete in a National Road Series event are automatically moved to A-grade. For exemptions please refer to section i) of rule 3.7.

f) Riders may request to be downgraded if they are clearly outperformed in their category independently from the terrain.

g)  All first year J19 will be put into C Grade. They may be given an exemption to ride in a higher grade if they:

- earned selection to an Institute of Sport or

- finished amongst the top-5 riders in the National Championship Road Race J17 or

- finished amongst the top-3 riders in the National Championship Time Trial J17 or

- are registered with a VRS/NRS team

PLEASE NOTE: Any grading inquiries need to be sent in writing to the following email address: vic.racing@cycling.org.au.

3.5 Series Points

The following process will be used for allocation of points:

  1. Points will be awarded for each event in the series (please refer to table 4).
  2. Individuals will be able to accumulate points for their own ranking by placing at each event. Riders who DNF or are DQ are not eligible for points.
  3. In case of a points tie the rider who has had more wins (then second-place finishes and so on) will be ranked higher. If there is still a tie the placing in the most recent race/stage will determine the ranking.

Riders who are leading the VRS for their grade will be awarded a series leader’s jersey. Riders must be at presentation to collect their jersey. They must wear the series leader’s jersey at any future VRS events where they are still the leader of the series. Riders may be refused a start in that race if they fail to wear the leader’s jersey.

After the final stage of the final VRS event the person who has the highest overall points for their grade will be awarded the VRS Champion.

The top Masters Women in each category will be recognized in the VRS points and will have a separate leader’s jersey. In the event that the overall leader of the grade is of Masters age, the rider will need to wear the Elite leader’s jersey. No Masters leader jersey will be handed out in this case.

e)       Only riders entered in an event as a team are eligible for team points.

h)       Guest riders (maximum one per event) may compete with a team providing they are not registered with any other 2018 VRS registered team (this includes registered VRS/NRS/UCI or club teams). A guest rider may be from a lower grade and may only ‘guest ride’ for one team throughout the year at maximum two events.

i)         Riders from a lower grade who haven’t competed more than twice in A grade as a guest rider keep riding in their grade.

An overall team ranking will be calculated based on total points accumulated by team members when they race for the team at VRS events. Any placing taken by riders riding as an individual will be forfeit

Cycling Victoria reserves the right to exclude any team application from the series.

3.7 Club Competition

In 2018 the VRS will continue having a club competition. This is where any points gained by a member of a Cycling Victorian affiliated club will be combined and at the end of the year the top will be awarded the club championship.

4.4 Stage Races

Riders need to start and complete each stage to continue in the race. An exemption may be made at the discretion of the event organiser and Chief Commissaire in case of mechanical mishaps or crashes. Riders who are allowed back in the race for the following stage(s) will no longer be contesting the Overall Classification but remain eligible for stage wins and stage series points.

Time Trial bikes are allowed at all time trial events and must be UCI approved. The red light policy applies to any time trial held on open roads.
