Format for the 2018 Kano Closed Competition – 21 October

This competition will be run on a round robin format. As far as possible, competitors are separated by grade and weight, then by age with the first five lightest competitors making a division, the next five lightest making the next division and so on.

Weigh-in is done at the Dojo during normal training times during the fortnight before and as there are not set weight classes, there is no weight cutting. This allows players to concentrate on the fight and not weight management. After close of registration on 14 October, you will receive an email as to when your expected start time would be. Please get there 15 minutes before your allocated time so we can do an attendance check (not earlier so as to avoid congestion at the dojo and the parking lot).

We are using a round robin format with 5 contestants per group; each competitor is matched against each of the remaining four people, meaning every competitor has 4 fights. Medals will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners.

The aim of the Kano Closed competition is to provide positive tournament experience without the normal stress and drama associated with the bigger competitions. In single elimination events, if a competitor loses his first fight, that is the end of the day. Club competitions allow competitors to gain months of tournament experience in one go!

Division winners are determined by overall performance. Each competitor receives the following points for each round of their division:

Win via Ippon: 10 points (Achieved by clear throw on the back, 20 sec. hold down, tap out)

Win via Waza-ari: 7 points (Achieved by a rolling throw across the back, 10 sec hold down. Waza-ari scores are not cumulative)

Loss: 0 points

If there is no result after regulation time, a period of ‘Golden Score’ follows where first score wins the fight. In the event that there is a draw between the two best competitors when the division is complete, the winner is the competitor who won the match between those individuals.

Guiding Rules

Our competitions are run to IJF (International Judo Federation) rules, modified to suit conditions.
