Portsea Nipper Program 2020


Club subscription notices were emailed out to all current Financial Members on 31/07/2019 They were emailed to the email address on file for each member. If you haven’t yet seen the email, please check your inbox. The sender is “Portsea Surf Life Saving Club Inc” and the subject heading is “Portsea Surf Life Saving Club Inc Account”

YOU WILL NEED YOUR LOGIN AND PASSWORD TO REGISTER FOR THE NIPPER PROGRAM. If you have forgotten your password, you can retrieve it by clicking on the "Username & Password" button at the top of the Members Login screen and requesting Password Retrieval.  Please do not contact the support team for password retrieval as we are unable to assist due to increased security that has been applied to the club's membership system. Please be aware that the Nipper team will not be able to assist you with website issues on registration day and this may result in delays to registering your children.  

If you have NOT received a subscription notice, it may mean your account for last season is still outstanding, meaning you are Non-Financial and resulting in your account being deactivated.  If you haven’t received your subscription notice, please email contact@portseasurf.com.au ASAP to have your subscription notice for 2017-18 resent. This will need to be paid, in addition to this year’s account, prior to you being eligible to register for Club programs.  For clarity, if your account is in arrears, you WILL BE INELIGIBLE to register for any of the Club’s education programs, including Nippers.  



Registrations for the Portsea Nipper program will be as follows:

  • Priority Registration Period for previous participants and their siblings:
    • Opens – Monday 2 September 2019 at 10:00am;
    • Closes – Monday 9 September 2019 at 5.00pm
  • New Nipper Registrations for first time participants:
    • Opens – Wednesday 11 September 2019 at 10:00am;
    • Closes – When Full (typically same day for some age groups)


To register for Portsea Nippers you must have a current Family Membership. Please make sure your Family Membership is paid prior to registering for Nippers. Only current financial members will be eligible to register. Prospective new members can do this by visiting the Club’s website at www.portseasurf.com.au and following the prompts (click on “Members” tab). Please note that Club Memberships are Non Refundable. Should you later decide not to participate in the Nippers Program or are unsuccessful in securing a place in the program, any Nipper Registration fees paid may be refunded, BUT not your Club Family Membership fee.

Only previous Nipper participants and their siblings are eligible to register during the Priority Period from 2 September – 9 September 2019. Those new to the program may not register until 10am on Wednesday 11 September 2019 when all remaining spaces will open. New participants attempting to register during the priority period will have their registrations moved to the back of the queue. This is in the interests of fairness to all. Please understand that remaining places typically fill very quickly and while we try to accommodate as many as we can, numbers are capped in the interests of water safety.


UNDER 7 AGE GROUP – To participate in this program your child must be 6 years old as at 1 October 2019. Parents of children participating in the U/7 Nippers Program MUST remain on the beach with their children for the duration of each session.


Children's ages are taken as at 1 October 2019 to participate in Nippers. If your child turns 9 for example, prior to 1/10/19, they will be in the U/10 age group. If that child turns 9 after 1/10/19, they will be in the U/9 age group. Each child must be registered in the correct age group and with the correct date of birth. This information is recorded with Life Saving Victoria for insurance, training and accreditation purposes. There will be no exceptions to this. The Club reserves its right to exclude any member found to have declared false information.

When registering, please note that the Mobile Telephone number that you provide during the registration process is the number that the Club will use to contact you with any SMS Notifications during the Nipper Program (eg. Inclement weather notifications, location changes, Code Red Fire changes, etc).


Nipper Gear will be delivered directly to you via Express Post from our supplier during the first week of December. Please note that at registration you must provide the address to which you would like the gear delivered, preferably your home address where someone is in attendance during the week (ie. Not beach house and NO P.O. BOXES PLEASE).  Your children WILL NOT be able to participate in the Nipper Program without the appropriate gear and there will be NO Nipper Gear available for collection at Portsea during the program.

All participants in the Portsea Nipper Program will receive a 2020 Portsea Nipper Program
pack containing:

- Portsea Nippers 2020 gear bag
- Portsea Nippers 2020 rash vest
- Portsea Nippers 2020 bucket hat
- Portsea lycra skull cap
(Name and Age Group should be written in waterproof black texter on the side of the skull cap)
- Portsea SLSC pink water safety vest
- Portsea SLSC stainless steel water bottle.

To reduce waste and manage ongoing program fees, the club has undertaken to trial the
following initiatives:

(i) Reusable Items - the Portsea SLSC pink water safety vest and the Portsea SLSC stainless
steel water bottle have been designed for use in future Nipper programs (rather than being
replaced each year). Please care for these items appropriately and they should last you
several years.

(ii) We will support LSV’s “Vietnam” learn to swim program in 2019/20. Participants in this
program have limited access to swimwear and will benefit immeasurably from the donation
of used rash vests at season end. The club will make bins available at the Competition Day
(11 January 2020) for the collection of Portsea Nippers 2020 rash vests that you may want to
donate to the program.


This year’s Accreditation Swim will take place on Friday 27th December. This will enable us to have all Nippers Accredited so we can commence the Program the following day at the first Nipper Session. The location of the Nipper Accreditation Swim will be advised closer to the commencement of the Nipper Program

Saturday 28/12/19 - Nippers 2

Monday 30/12/19 - Nippers 3

Tuesday 31/12/19 - Nippers 4

Thursday 2/1/20 - Nippers 5

Friday 3/1/20 - U13 Boot Camp

Saturday 4/1/20 - Nippers 6

Saturday 11/1/20 - Comp Day

Nipper sessions will be run between Portsea Back Beach and either Blairgowrie Front Beach or at the Quarantine Station in Point Nepean National Park (TBC). Location may be weather dependent and may change at short notice. It is therefore important that the mobile number to which SMS notifications will be sent is accurate when registering your children.


Portsea will again be assembling a Nipper Competition Team to compete against other clubs at Nipper carnivals, Regional Championships and the Victorian Titles. Training sessions are offered in Melbourne and on the Peninsula, with the focus on developing skills and having fun. If you are interested, or would like more information, please tick the box as part of the registration process and you will be emailed further details in due course.


The successful running of the program relies on parental involvement. For information about becoming an LSV accredited Age Manager, completing the Nipper Parent Bronze Medallion course so you too may assist with water safety or helping out during the Nipper sessions please, tick the box as part of the registration process.

By registering for the 2020 Portsea Nippers Program, all participants and their
parents/guardians acknowledge that they may be photographed and that these images may
be used by the club without prior approval.

By registering for the 2020 Portsea Nippers Program, all participants and their

PLEASE NOTE:  Recent changes to Child Protection laws now make it appropriate for PSLSC to require all nipper parent, guardians and siblings 18 and over to have a Working With Children Check (WWCC). For further details on how to apply for a WWCC, please see the following link:
